samshimi x Chef's Plate :: Overall Review + Discount Code

Hello Everyone!

Are you a busy individual who would love to cook more at home but simply doesn't have time to plan meals and buy groceries to do so? Are you someone that wants to start cooking but doesn't have any direction in what to make? If these thoughts ever pass your mind, then Chef's Plate may possibly be your solution!

Chef's Plate is a Toronto based meal delivery system.

How it works is that they plan and create a bunch of delicious and nutritious recipes every week. Then you go on their website and choose which recipes you are interested in trying out the following week. Next, they deliver your chosen recipes the following week in a refrigerated box (which keeps food fresh for 12 hours, perfect for individuals who don't work from home!) with fresh pre-portioned ingredients right to your door. Lastly, you just follow the recipe card and you will have a fresh home cooked meal!

Recently, a member of Chef's Plate reached out to me and offered me 2 free plates to test out and review. I don't really cook often (but I wish I did!) so I was super excited to try it out! I live in a busy household with long work hours, so 95% of the time I usually eat out since I don't have time to prep to cook meals at home.

What I really enjoyed was how nicely packaged everything was. In the cardboard box, there was an aluminum bubble wrap bag with reusable ice packs in it to keep everything fresh while it waits for you to come home and bring it in. Everything was neatly packed and labelled so it's super easy for someone to come home to and start cooking.

The recipe cards are super easy to follow and have photos for guidance.

The ingredients are all labelled and are separated by what dish they are for.

Box contents for 2 dishes.

I choose one fish and one meat dish of "medium" since I figured it would give me a good basis to provide my opinion on the service.

I made the Pan Seared Cod with Fennel & Linguine first since fish doesn't stay as fresh as long as red meats. Click here for a more detailed post of how how it was cooked.

Made the Pistachio Crusted Steak near the end of the week. It was pretty fresh! Click here for a more detailed post of how it was made.

Overall here's what I thought about Chef's Plate.

What I liked:

  • Convenient: It's definitely a great way to motivate busy individuals to cook more since the dish is already planned for you and the ingredients are already pre-portioned and delivered to your door.
  • Fresh ingredients: Ingredients are fresh and are ready to go, so no waiting for things to ripen - like green bananas from the grocery store. This is also great cause you exactly what is going into your food.
  • Less food waste: Since everything is pre-portioned to your meal, you end up with less food waste then if you were to go out to a grocery store and purchase food for a particular dish.
  • Customizable: You get to pick what you want to eat before you get it. Also, since you're cooking your own food, you can tweak the dish to exactly how you like it by take out or adding some ingredients - or cooking particular ingredients more or less.

What I thought could have been better:

  • If you live by yourself and don't have a stocked kitchen, then you might not have all the ingredients required for Chef's Plate. Despite giving you pre-portioned ingredients, they do not provide oil, salt, or some other basic ingredients (very few is not provided). They also do not provide the option of providing cooking tools. This can be inconvenient if you plan to go home to cook a meal and you don't have a particular ingredient or tool to cook your dish.
  • Although it's super convenient and organized, there is a lot of plastic wrap waste. They do use reusables (ie: reusable ice pack, reusable white wine bottle) but most of the packaging is clear plastic bags. I'm not sure what other alternatives they can do but this service does have an ecological footprint.
  • Despite the recipe cards are clear and concise, there were times that I wasn't sure if I was carrying out the recipe correctly and wanted to consult the photos for clarification. The photo on the recipe card is on the smaller side and difficult to see how small or thin ingredients needed to be cut (ie: wasn't sure how small to cut the fennel in the cod dish).
  • It would be kind of cool if they also printed how much of each ingredient is included with package so then people can pull out the recipe card and remake the dish later on (though this may be a business conflict of interest)
  • Cost may be an issue for some people. The smallest order you can make for a week is 2 meals for 2 people. This costs $49.80/week + $6 shipping. Upside all other menu options provide free delivery. What is nice though is they have a referral program where if you refer your  friends you will get credit to your account.

Overall, I do recommend Chef's Plate to busy individuals interested in leading a healthier lifestyle and trying to cook more often. You can even use Chef's Plate as an easy way to impressively cook a meal for a date so then you don't need to do grocery shopping and meal planning!

I was quite happy with the service myself and fully intend on purchasing another week subscription of Chef's Plate in the future! Just be aware, the website advertises that meals can be prepared in 30 minutes or less, but if you are not an experienced cook (like myself), more difficult dishes may take you longer to prepare. I tried 2 medium dishes and they took me about 45 minutes or longer to prepare (probably because I was documenting each step too! haha).

If you want to check out Chef's Plate, you can follow my referral link to be directed to their website (though you are more than welcome to simply to go to chefsplate.com to check it out if you don't want to use my referral link). If you end up trying out Chef's Plate, tag me in your photos (@samshimi) on Instagram or use the hashtags #samshimixChefsPlate and #ChefsPlate so I can see them too!

The folks at Chef's Plate also provided an awesome coupon/promotional code "SAMSHIMI" that you can use when checking out to redeem 2 plates / 1 meal for free with your first Chef's Plate order!

Southern Accent :: Complimentary Tasting Menu Review

Today, Southern Accent invited me to go a complimentary tasting menu at their restaurant! Southern Accent features Cajun & Creole cuisine and is located in Koreatown of Downtown Toronto, close to Honest Ed's (and super close to the Bathurst Subway Station). I brought my mother and Southern Accent gracefully accommodated my plus one. Our super friendly waitress, Wendy, told us that Southern Accent has resided at its current location for 29 years!

Wendy's been working at Southern Accent for 20 years and her knowledge and enthusiasm for the food was quite infectious. She informed us that Southern Accent offers 'Special Menus' to cater to individuals who have a vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, and/or dairy free diet. I was quite impressed with the special accommodations they make for individuals with specific dietary restrictions to ensure that all their guests enjoy their meal. She also pointed out that Southern Accent had an unique Cajun/Creole/New Orleans inspired drink menu, which ranged from a spicy Cajun Caesar to a fruity Gator Bait.

Gaitor Bait ($8/10)
coconut rum, melon liquor, Blue Curacao, Irish cream, pineapple orange juice

Gaitor Bait is one of Southern Accent's popular alcoholic drinks and was described as a smooth and easy piña colada. It's more on the fruity & sweet side and reminiscent of a piña colada flavoured candy. I personally enjoy sweet and fruity drinks, so Gaiter Bait was right up my alley - though I can understand it may be a little sweet for some individuals.

Hurricane

Hurricane is one of Southern Accent's non-alcoholic drinks. It is also fruity in nature. Just like Gaitor Bait, Hurricane's flavour was also similar to candy - but a strawberry and fruity one. Between Gaitor Bait and Hurricane, I preferred Hurricane.

For our appetizers, Southern Accent provided a tasting of their various delicious appetizers. As such, please note that portions are smaller.

Cajun Calamari  ($9)
tender crispy rings of calamari coated with spices, deep-fried and served with ginger remoulade and blackened tomato coulis

Wendy describes the Cajun Calamari as 'the best calamari you can find in the city'. Both my mother and I thought that the calamari was absolutely delicious. The batter was seasoned and delicious without being doughy and the calamari was cooked well without being rubbery. The seasoned sauce harmonized with the fried calamari beautifully.

Assortment of Appetizers: Hush Puppies, Piquant Shrimp, Blackened Chicken Livers
hush puppies: served with garlic lime piquant sauce ($6)
piquant shrimp: black tiger shrimp sautéed in our garlic lime hot sauce, served with hush puppies ($9)
blackened chicken livers: chicken livers tossed in house blackening spices, seared on a cast iron pan, napped with fresh lemon beurre, and served with garlic bread ($9)

On this dish, an assortment of appetizers were provided. The Piquant Shrimp was good, though the spice slowly catches up to you. However, the spice elevated the flavour! Hush Puppies are fried cornbread balls made for dipping into sauces, like the piquant shrimp's garlic lime hot sauce. The hush puppies are creative and yummy, but the favourite of the appetizer dish was the Blackened Chicken Livers. The Blackened Chicken Liver was rich in flavour and soft which contrasted well with the crunchy buttery garlic bread. Since the livers were seared on a cast iron plan, the slight burn contributed to a more 'smokey' flavour. My mother and I really enjoyed the Blackened Chicken Liver.

Assortment of Entrees: Bourbon Street Chicken, French Quarter Lamb, Canal Street Creole Jambalaya, Dauphine Street Cracker Catfish
Bourbon Street Chicken: blackened, boneless, chicken breast with fresh lemon beurre, normally served with garlic mash potatoes, roasted yellow and green zucchini ($18.50)
French Quarter Lamb: blackened, grilled lamb loin chops marinated in rosemary, white whine, mustard with apricot, ginger and mint glaze, served with garlic mash potatoes and green beans ($26)
Canal Street Creole Jambalaya: a highly seasoned rice dish with chicken, smoked ham, andouille sausage and tomatoes; served on a bayou sauce with baby shrimp and topped with shredded sautéed collards ($18.50)
Dauphine Street Cracker Catfish: farm raised louisiana catfish fillet with a crispy coating of crackers and spice, served with pickled jalapeño tartar sauce, cumin basmati rice with pan seared collard greens ($19.50)

I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the Bourbon Street Chicken! I am a tough crowd for chicken as it's hardly ever cooked in a way that it is soft, tender, and moist. However, all of those three traits were found in the Bourbon Street Chicken! Also, the fresh lemon beurre went deliciously well with the chicken.

My second favourite was the French Quarter Lamb. As an avid lamb eater I was delighted to see this appear on the tasting menu! The lamb was seasoned well and not overly cooked. It was easy to cut into with the knife and a joy to eat. Unlike the regular menu, the mash potatoes were not included in the tasting menu.

My mom's personal favourite of all the entrees was the Canal Street Creole Jambalaya. It was a burst of flavour. The rice was seasoned in a way that it was tangy yet sweet & the chicken was tender.

Lastly, the Dauphine Street Cracker Catfish was also quite yummy. It was crispy and went well with the jalapeño tartar sauce. It's a great fish dish for those who have tendencies towards fish, but personally, I would prefer the other 3 dishes as they were more flavourful in my opinion and unique to Southern Accent.

Marie Leveau Voodoo Seafood Pasta ($22)
Marie Leveau Voodoo Seafood Pasta: squid ink penne pasta with shrimp, scallops, and lobster in a spicy file cream sauce

I love this pasta!!! It was delicious! The pasta was cooked just the way I like it - firm but not too hard. The sauce was very slightly spicy and covered the pasta's components well. Wendy explained that the pasta was named after Marie Leveau, a voodoo witch from New Orleans since the spice seems to "magically" give you a kick! (For those who watch American Horror Stories Season 3 - Marie Levau is referenced in it!)

Nawlins Bread Pudding ($8)
with apples, pecans, and raisins; served with bourbon sauce

Lastly, dessert was served! By the time we were eating dessert - we were stuffed! The pudding bread has pecans and raisins throughout and apple-pie-like-apple slices near the bottom. The bourbon sauces was delicious and added an extra flavour to the pudding.

All in all, I had an extremely wonderful experience at Southern Accent and I highly recommend anyone to try it. I'm surprised that I've never heard or tried Southern Accent prior to them reaching out to myself - but I am glad they did! I look forward in visiting them again in the near future. Their menu is top quality and food consistently tastes amazing regardless of what you order.

Thank you Southern Accent!
